Upon the death of a designated beneficiary(ies), a new beneficiary must be assigned. If SJCERA does not have a valid beneficiary on file, the final check up to date of death and any death benefit if applicable, will be paid to the member’s estate. In order to assign a new beneficiary(ies), Beneficiary Designation form must be completed and submitted to SJCERA.
Upon the death of a spouse/registered domestic partner after retirement, a new spouse/partner will not be entitled to the monthly continuance that was chosen at the time of retirement. However, the new spouse/partner may be eligible to receive a $5,000 death benefit upon the death of the SJCERA retiree.
