| joinder | Joinder is the legal term for the joining of a retirement plan account to a marriage dissolution proceeding. A spouse who is seeking to divide a members account upon divorce must first join the retirement plan as a party to the proceeding. |
| joint and survivor option | A pension plan provision in which, based on the age of a designated survivor (usually ones spouse), a reduced pension is paid as long as one of the two parties is living. Under ERISA, this is the automatic retirement-income option for a married plan participant, unless another method of payment is elected.
